Warm Up with Ponche Navideño: A Traditional Texan Holiday Punch

No Christmas celebration is complete without a warm, inviting beverage to share with loved ones. Ponche Navideño is a classic Texan holiday punch made with seasonal fruits, cinnamon, and a touch of tequila or rum for an added festive kick.

Ingredients:

  • 10 cups of water

  • 4 tamarind pods, peeled

  • 1/2 cup hibiscus flowers (optional)

  • 4 cinnamon sticks

  • 6 cloves

  • 1 cup piloncillo (or brown sugar)

  • 2 guavas, sliced

  • 2 apples, sliced

  • 1 orange, sliced

  • 1/2 cup prunes

  • 1/2 cup raisins

  • 1/2 cup fresh sugarcane sticks (optional, peeled and cut into small pieces)

  • Optional: 1 cup of tequila, rum, or brandy

  • Garnishes: Orange slices and cinnamon sticks

Instructions:

  1. In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Add tamarind pods, hibiscus flowers, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and piloncillo or brown sugar. Stir until the sugar dissolves.

  2. Reduce heat to medium and add guavas, apples, orange slices, prunes, raisins, and sugarcane sticks.

  3. Simmer for 30-40 minutes until the fruit softens and the flavors meld.

  4. If desired, add tequila, rum, or brandy to the punch just before serving.

  5. Serve warm in mugs, garnished with orange slices and cinnamon sticks.

This aromatic punch is perfect for warming up your holiday celebrations and pairs beautifully with the cozy charm of a West Texas home.
